WHY SHOULD I JOIN AAST? - To gain real world experience in the applied sciences
- To create opportunities for individual growth
- To gain practical work experience
- To receive special recognition at graduation
- To have the opportunity to learn with others who share the same interests
- To have leadership, service, and extra-curricular activities listed on their college and/or job application
WHO CAN JOIN? Any rising 10th grader is eligible to join the Academy of Applied Science Technology. Students should pass their 9th grade science class with a “C” or better. Teacher recommendations will also be considered when applying. Students who are admitted to the academy will begin taking a sophomore-level career / academic cohort class to show the applications of academics in real-world situations. After investigating their career interests and completing an entry level academy course, students agree to commit to the academy for the remainder of their academic career at KHS. This commitment will culminate in an internship their senior year at a local business to see how all of their studies apply in a “real world” situation. WHAT IF I WANT OUT? At the end of the student’s sophomore year, any student may decide to “opt-out” of the academy. In this phase of the academy, students commit to completing a 180-hour internship their senior year. HOW DO I APPLY? Application packets are available in Mr. Duncan’s office (Rm 2619), any science teacher’s classroom, the KHS media center, and on the school website at http://knightdalehs.wcpss.net/careeracademy/.
