Q: What phone number do I call if my child will be absent from school? A: Please call 217-5379 between 8:00-11:00am. Please remember to bring a note upon return to document the absence. Q: If I want my child to ride the bus home with a friend, what approval is needed and how soon in advance? A: Students must ride the bus they are assigned to ride. All requests for students to ride a bus they are not assigned will be denied. Q: Where can I pick up homework for my child if I made a request for the absence? A: Students who are absent less than three (3) consecutive days may obtain missed assignments upon returning to school. Students who are absent three (3) or more consecutive days may request missed assignments by contacting student services by 8:00am of the third day. Assignments will be available in student services after 3:00pm. Please call 217-5400 to request assignments. Please allow at least 24 hours for assignments to be collected. Q: What is the procedure for dropping off and picking up my child? A: All carpool students should use the front traffic circle to drop off and pick up. To alleviate congestion in the mornings, students should exit vehicles as quickly as possible. Parents should drop students off along the entire length of the sidewalk. This will allow students to exit 10 or more vehicles at one time. Use the same procedure for pick-up. Q: Where can I find the required forms for medication? A: Forms are available in the main office. Contact the school nurse or school office for copies. You may also download the form from the county website (http://www.wcpss.net/forms/index.html). Q: How many locks should I purchase for my child? A: The school provides student lockers that are not equipped with combination locks; however, combination locks are provided for students. Students are expected to assume full responsibility for the security of their lockers, this includes PE lockers. Students must secure lockers with a combination lock. Only combination locks issued by the school are allowed. All other locks will be removed. Combination locks may be checked out through the media center. Q: Where can I make payment to my child’s lunch account? A: Wake County offers a convenient monthly payment option for school lunches. Sign up for the AutoPay Lunch Money Program to have your child's lunch money automatically deducted from your bank account or charged to a credit card at the beginning of each month. You may also make payments online by going to http://www.wcpss.net/child-nutrition/new_online_payment.html. Q: Where can I find the applications for Free and Reduced Lunch? A: Applications are available in Student Services. Q: Where can I learn about activities taking place in school? A: Students should listen to daily announcements or check the calendar on the school’s website. Announcements are also displayed on TV monitors throughout the school. Q: Where is Lost and Found? A: The lost and found area is located in the Student Services. All found items should be turned there. Items may be claimed during regular school hours. After 30 days, unclaimed items will be donated to a charitable organization. Q: When are report cards distributed? A: Report cards will be distributed on the following dates: November 7, January 30, April 16, and June 11. The final report card is mailed. Q How can I arrange a parent-teacher conference? A: Always begin by contacting the teacher to discuss concerns. Email contact is available in the KHS Staff Directory. If you need a meeting with 2 or more teachers you may contact your child’s counselor to assist with arranging a parent-teacher conference. Counselors can be reached by calling 217-5400. Q: What are the general school rules? A: The Wake County Student/Parent Handbook and the KHS Student/Parent Handbook provide policies and regulations that govern student behavior. Our goal is to promote a positive, safe learning and working environment based on mutual respect. Our overall focus is on character, knowledge, and achievement! Q: What can students wear to school? A: Student dress should be appropriate for an effective learning environment. Students are expected and required to wear clothing that is not disruptive, provocative, indecent, vulgar, or obscene. Q: Who can I contact if I have questions about special programs or my child’s IEP? A: Please contact your child’s case manager or the Special Programs department chair for information regarding special programs. Q: Who do I contact to discuss discipline issues? A: All administrators handle student discipline issues. Contact the administrator who worked directly with your child. It is also important to conference with teachers and counselor when you have concerns regarding your child’s behavior. Q: How can I find out my child’s bus route? A: Bus routes were published and were distributed at Open House. Copies are also available in the main office. For more information, you may call the transportation office at 217-5377. Q: How do I register for Driver’s Education classes? A: Jordan Driving School is the company WCPSS contracts with to lead driver’s education classes. Listen to daily announcements, visit the KHS Driver Education Site, or go to Student Services to learn where to sign up for classes. The driver’s education coordinator can be reached at 217-5378. Q: What are the academic requirements for keeping my driving permit? A: A student must pass three out of four classes each semester and be currently enrolled in school to obtain and keep a driving permit. See the Drivers License/Dropout Prevention section for additional information. Q: When can I get my driver’s license? A: After having a valid permit for one year, you are eligible for a driver’s license. Q: Can I graduate early? A: If you successfully complete your required courses in the ninth through the eleventh grades, you may be eligible to graduate at the end of the eleventh year or at the end of fall semester in your senior year. Students who have not failed any classes in high school usually only have English IV and an elective to complete graduation requirements in their senior year. Q: What is dual enrollment? A: Dual enrollment allows students to pursue academic interests that are not available to them in WCPSS. Courses offered by universities, community colleges, or non-WCPSS secondary schools (NCVPS) can be approved through an application process initiated by the student. Dual enrollment courses are approved on an individual student basis each year. Course taken through dual enrollment must not be offered at KHS.
Q: What classes must I pass to be promoted? A: Promotion requirement can be found in the High School Program Planning Guide. Promotion is based on the number of credits earned, successful completion of English, and other core academic courses. Q: How can I monitor my child’s academic progress? A: There are several ways to monitor how students are performing in high school. - Review interim reports and report cards during each marking period.
